Burst Pipe or Boiler Breakdown? What to Do in a Plumbing Emergency

A plumbing emergency never happens at a convenient time. Whether it’s a burst pipe flooding your kitchen at midnight or your boiler packing in on the coldest morning of the year, knowing what to do in those first few minutes can make a real difference to the damage caused and the cost of putting things right.

A plumbing emergency never happens at a convenient time. Whether it’s a burst pipe flooding your kitchen at midnight or your boiler packing in on the coldest morning of the year, knowing what to do in those first few minutes can make a real difference to the damage caused and the cost of putting things right.

Not every plumbing issue needs an emergency call-out, but some situations can’t wait. A plumbing emergency is generally anything that poses an immediate risk to your property, your health or your safety.

This includes burst or leaking pipes that are causing water damage, a complete loss of heating or hot water during cold weather, a gas leak or the smell of gas near your boiler, sewage backing up into your property and an overflowing toilet or drain that can’t be stopped.

If you’re unsure whether your situation is urgent, it’s always better to call and ask than to leave it and risk further damage.

Burst Pipe: What To Do First

A burst pipe can cause serious damage quickly, so acting fast is important. The first thing to do is turn off your water supply at the stopcock. This is usually found under the kitchen sink, in a utility cupboard or near the front door. Once the water is off, open the taps to drain any remaining water from the system and relieve pressure in the pipes.

If the water is near any electrical sockets, appliances or your fuse box, switch off the electricity at the mains as a precaution. Move any furniture, valuables or belongings away from the affected area and use towels, buckets or containers to catch any dripping water and limit the spread.

Once you’ve done what you can to contain the situation, call a qualified plumber to assess and repair the damage.

If You Smell Gas

A gas leak is the most serious emergency on this list and needs to be treated with extreme caution.

Do not turn any electrical switches on or off, do not use your phone inside the property, do not light matches or use any naked flames and open all windows and doors to ventilate the property. Leave the property immediately and call professionals in to ensure the property is safe once again.

How To Reduce The Risk Of Plumbing Emergencies

Prevention is always better than a late-night call-out. There are a few simple steps that can help reduce the chances of a plumbing emergency catching you off guard.

  • Servicing your boiler annually keeps it running efficiently and helps catch small faults before they become bigger problems.
  • Lagging exposed pipes before winter protects them from freezing and bursting in cold snaps.
  • Knowing where your stopcock is and checking it turns easily, means you can act quickly if a leak does occur.
  • Keeping an eye on your boiler pressure and bleeding your radiators when needed helps your heating system run smoothly.
  • Avoiding pouring fats, oils or food waste down the sink reduces the risk of blocked drains building up over time.

Check Your Water Heater

Your water heater has been working hard all winter. Spring is a good time to check for any signs of wear, corrosion or leaks around the unit.

If your hot water has been taking longer to heat up or isn’t reaching the temperatures it used to, it may be time for a service.

A well-maintained water heater runs more efficiently, keeping your energy bills down and ensuring you have reliable hot water throughout the warmer months.

When To Call A Professional

Some jobs are fine to handle yourself, like repressurising a boiler or tightening a loose tap. But anything involving gas, major leaks or sewage should always be left to a qualified professional. Attempting repairs without the right training can make the problem worse, void your warranty or put your safety at risk.

Amber Heating Solutions offers emergency plumbing services across Norfolk and Suffolk, with Gas Safe-registered engineers available to respond quickly when things go wrong.
